Define your audience

For this year’s very first tip, we’ll start with a simple but powerful one. Every time you write or create anything for your organisation always be sure you know who you are trying to engage with. Is it for people who don’t know you? Your long time supporters? What do they know and what do they not?

Always put yourself in your supporters’ shoes wherever possible and imagine (and actually ask!) how they’ll respond to your work. And monitor your campaigns and communications to see which they respond to and which they don’t!

If you feel like you don’t know your audience well enough then reach out to your biggest supporters and ask for the opinion of your own family and friends. Especially those that will offer you a differing perspective!

Here’s a quick rundown of some just a few of the things you might want to consider finding out about as you learn more about your audience, so you can tailor your communications with them:

  • Age/ age bracket
  • Location
  • Hobbies/interests
  • Employment status and industry
  • Preferred social media platforms
  • Which of your projects are they most interested in?
Some info which might help tailoring your message!
